LOG MANAGEMENT: A compliance ‘tick in the box’ or a serious tool in the fight against cybercrime?

Many organisations from government agencies to global corporations are implementing or have deployed logging solutions. A significant percentage of these deployments have been driven by a need to tick a regulatory compliance requirement box.  However, log management should not be treated as a hindrance to business or just another hoop to jump through to comply. In the current fight against cybercrime, automated log analysis provides the foundation of modern day security.

Companies recognize that the traditional approach to security is becoming less effective over time. While businesses continue to focus on perimeter and end-point security measures, cybercriminals are changing the game though new types of malware combined with social engineering and insider help.

Whether it is malware, malicious system users, or contractors, a trail of digital fingerprints is left behind that, if properly analysed, will alert an enterprise to threats and risks before it is too late. Therefore, Log management solutions provide the information foundation through the capture, consolidation and centralisation of log and event information. Building on top of this foundation, smart tools are essential to correlate and analyse events across the different channels, uncovering patterns of nefarious activity from the fingerprints contained in the log events. Smart tools also can also reduce the volume of security events to a manageable number and present these to security operations in a prioritised way based on the situational awareness of the assets and business processes involved.

In summary, log management is not just about compliance. Together, log management and smart correlation tools can provide a formidable defence in the ongoing fight against cybercrime.
