The Information Security Leaders event has come of age. What started in 2009 as a modest but ambitious roadshow has developed into an influential and highly professional industry event, backed now by the global resources of HP. 

The overall theme at ISL was “transformation”. Most experts now agree that for information security to develop it must transform itself and become an integral part of the business process and organisation.

But what ISL showed is that this is still a complicated and lengthy process that throws up as many arguments as it does solutions. However what was also clear from speakers like Simon Shiu of HP Labs and David Pym, Head of the School of Natural and Computing Sciences, University of Aberdeen was that some very serious and smart people were actively researching and developing new models and processes to revolutionise the security management life cycle.

Such presentations complimented the real world examples of melding security into the business processes of FTSE 100 companies from luminaries Paul Wood the CSO of Aviva and Mark Brown, CISO at SAB MIller.

Theory and concepts are fine but delegates were also rewarded with examples of how to do their jobs better - surely one of the best reasons to attend such events. Ian Lawden, Security Operations Manager for DWP and David Ross, Head of Technology Risk & Security for National Australia Group Europe did not disappoint with polished how-to presentations on advanced security management.

In the end a successful professional event can be defined as having combined the controversial, the aspirational and the practical to achieve enlightenment. This year, Information Security Leaders went a long way to achieving that.
